What Happens to Roleplay in GTA6 — The Current State and Future of an RP Culture Moving Toward Officialization and Consolidation

Living out everyday life in the world of GTA5 as a police officer, a medical worker, or just an ordinary citizen who is no one in particular — so-called roleplay (RP) has, over time, become firmly established as another way to play GTA. And with GTA6 set to arrive on November 19, 2026, expectations are rising that this kind of RP play will expand even further.

That said, the material behind these expectations is a mix of confirmed facts that Rockstar Games has officially acknowledged, unverified information that remains at the leak or rumor stage, and speculation tinged with wishful thinking. GTA6 FEED has sorted out the current state of RP culture and the seismic shifts heading into the GTA6 era, separating them by level of reliability.

This article is based on information as of June 24, 2026.

What Is GTA RP in the First Place

GTA RP is a way of playing built on top of GTA5's multiplayer by third-party platforms and servers run by enthusiasts. Players act out a single character, fully embodying their respective roles — police officer, paramedic, mechanic, business owner, criminal, and so on — and continue living life in the city. In contrast to GTA's inherently chaotic play, it is characterized by obeying traffic rules, holding down a job, and forming a society with other players.

Its iconic example is NoPixel, known as the largest RP server in the English-speaking world. Many prominent streamers take part, and the drama and incidents they generate have been widely watched through streaming. GTA RP is also a field that grew while being strongly tied to streaming culture.

The appeal of RP lies in a different direction from GTA's original play of churning through prepared missions one after another. Under rules closer to a strict economy and a life simulation where actions have consequences, players settle into the city as the role they have chosen. They can spend their days immersed in flashy incidents, or they can choose a quiet, ordinary life — that breadth of range, and the tangible sense of being able to choose your own story, is said to be why GTA RP has earned its own distinct popularity.

The Confirmed Facts: The RP Ecosystem Is Simultaneously Becoming Official, Consolidated, and Monetized

Ahead of GTA6's release, the environment surrounding RP has shifted dramatically over the past year or two. The following are all confirmed facts based on official announcements or statements by the parties involved.

NoPixel Has Officially Partnered With Rockstar

On September 23, 2025, NoPixel announced its next-generation version, NoPixel V, and revealed that it is being developed through direct collaboration with Rockstar Games. While NoPixel V is built on FiveM, it will be possible to launch it directly as a title from platforms such as the Rockstar Games Launcher, without separately installing the external FiveM client app as before. This is the first official partnership of its kind, in which an RP server is incorporated as an official title into Rockstar's own launcher. Rockstar, too, expressed its support for the NoPixel team through its official account.

What stands out is that this initiative was described as the next evolution of the GTA V roleplay experience. Rockstar, which once tried to remove FiveM as something illegal, has reversed its stance to become a side that officially backs RP. For streamers and server operators long placed in the legal gray zone of mods, gaining an official backing that lets them work without fearing sudden takedowns carries significant meaning.

For a while after the announcement there was no notable follow-up, but on June 22, 2026, leaker Tez2 (@TexFunz2) confirmed that NoPixel V had been added as a single title in the backend of the Rockstar Games Launcher. Logo and background art assets were also found, taken as a sign that a release is near. However, neither Rockstar nor NoPixel has issued any official follow-up, and the release date, price, and access method (whether free, subscription, or invite-only) all remain undetermined.

FiveM Is Under Rockstar and Has Reached Its Largest Scale Ever

The foundation on which NoPixel and many other RP servers have run is FiveM. cfx.re, the developer of FiveM, was acquired by Rockstar (parent company Take-Two) in August 2023, and FiveM is now officially owned by Rockstar.

That same FiveM was registered on Steam in December 2025, and on March 15, 2026, it set a new all-time record of 202,756 concurrent players. This figure is for Steam users only, so the actual scale is thought to be even larger. Several years after the acquisition, FiveM has an unprecedented presence as the center of GTA V multiplayer modding.

Rival Platforms Are Shutting Down One After Another

Meanwhile, options other than FiveM are rapidly disappearing. Historically, GTA V multiplayer modding had three main foundations — FiveM, alt:V, and RAGE:MP — but the latter two have both decided to shut down after receiving cease-and-desist requests from Take-Two.

  • alt:V received a cease-and-desist in 2026 and, after a phased shutdown, is expected to fully close on July 6.
  • RAGE:MP also received a cease-and-desist and announced that it would close its public server list on June 1 and end all functionality on August 31.

As grounds for this, the operators of both platforms have issued statements to the effect that Rockstar and Take-Two have made it clear that FiveM is the only platform permitted for GTA V multiplayer modding. As a result, the view is being voiced in various places that from September 2026 onward, GTA V multiplayer modding will be FiveM-only. It is a trend in which the broad base that has supported RP converges onto a single, officially managed foundation.

The Official Store Cfx Marketplace, Which Consolidates Mod Transactions, Has Begun Operating

On January 12, 2026, Rockstar launched the official mod store Cfx Marketplace for FiveM and RedM. However, this is not a story of mod sales on FiveM being officialized for the first time. On FiveM, the payment partner Tebex had long been treated as the de facto official monetization channel, and under Rockstar's Creator Platform terms, server charges have been premised on going through Tebex. Transactions of paid scripts and MLOs (custom interiors) were also widely conducted through Tebex and various community channels. Earning revenue from mods was, in itself, already within an officially sanctioned framework.

What is new this time is that such dispersed transactions have been consolidated into a single primary store operated by Cfx itself. Cfx Marketplace is positioned as an official UGC marketplace under the Rockstar brand, equipped with review, escrow payment, and creator verification (the payments themselves continue to be handled by Tebex). High-priced items also line its shelves, such as a theme park mod at 129.99 dollars and creator packs up to 389.99 dollars. In terms of roles, against Tebex, which handles charges from servers to players, Cfx Marketplace serves the distinct role of asset sales from creators to server operators. It is a move in which Rockstar consolidates and strengthens the monetization of RP-oriented creative work more directly under its own management, and it is two sides of the same coin as the criticism of excessive monetization discussed later.

Integration With the Streaming Platform Twitch Is Also Advancing

RP and streaming culture are inseparable, and there is movement on the streaming side as well. Mike Minton, Twitch's Chief Monetization Officer, acknowledged in a 2025 interview that Twitch is working directly with Rockstar and Take-Two ahead of GTA6's release. Minton positioned GTA5 as having been revived by RP and showed a stance of staying involved with GTA6 over the long term. In fact, Rockstar has repeatedly carried out measures to back RP, such as offering prize money to RP streamers and distributing in-game rewards through Twitch Drops. However, even Minton has avoided stating clearly whether an official Twitch-linked RP server will be prepared.

In addition, Rockstar has posted job openings related to its Creator Platform, and the names of foundations such as FiveM and RedM are explicitly written in those job duties. This can be called confirmed material showing that work is underway to build a structure for seriously cultivating RP and UGC (user-generated content) as products.

Unverified Leaks and Rumors: Project ROME

From here on is not confirmed fact but information at the leak or rumor stage.

Toward GTA6, the rumor that Rockstar is preparing an official modding and multiplayer foundation called Project ROME (Rockstar Online Modding Engine) has repeatedly surfaced since around February 2025. According to leaks, this is an official toolset that succeeds FiveM, allowing players to create their own game modes, servers, and custom experiences within GTA6, and is said to aim to transform GTA from a game into a platform. Creative and monetization systems like those of Fortnite and Roblox are often cited as comparisons.

However, Project ROME has not been officially confirmed by Rockstar in any way. There is no press release, no Newswire post, and no trailer; the basis remains an accumulation of circumstantial evidence such as datamining finds, testimony from former insiders, and job listings. Even if it exists, the crucial points — whether it will support consoles, whether it will extend to single-player, and whether you can earn revenue from your creations — are all unknown. It is an indispensable topic when discussing GTA6 RP, but at this point it is reasonable to treat it as a rumor.

To begin with, Rockstar has revealed almost nothing about GTA6's online mode itself. The features, name, and start timing of GTA6 Online are all unannounced, and there is no guarantee that official RP features or first-party RP servers will be prepared. Because the phrase the future of GTA RP used in the NoPixel partnership announcement was not limited to GTA V, some expect it to be groundwork for official RP support in GTA6 Online, but this too does not go beyond speculation based on interpreting the wording. What is confirmed extends only as far as the fact that the official side is backing GTA5-era RP, and it has not been decided that this will be carried over to GTA6 as is.

A Critical Perspective: The Argument That Officialization Comes at a Cost

While there are voices welcoming officialization, strong criticism has also emerged from those directly involved.

Disquse, who identifies as a former lead developer of FiveM, published a lengthy statement in early 2026 that was reported by multiple gaming outlets. The core of the argument is that the continued support and improved relationship with the modding community that Rockstar promised at the time of acquisition were not delivered, and that the promises were lies. According to the statement, by mid-2024 the original cfx.re team had been pushed out, after which FiveM came to suffer from bugs, cheating, and abuse, and monetization was prioritized over fundamental fixes.

Regarding the closures of alt:V and RAGE:MP as well, concerns are voiced about the independent foundations that supported creative freedom disappearing and a state without competition emerging. The point is that if no competitors exist, there is little external pressure compelling FiveM to respond quickly to pricing or community requests. These are, to be sure, the assessments of involved parties and commentators rather than Rockstar's official position, but they are worth keeping in mind as a perspective that officialization does not necessarily equal pure progress.

The Biggest Obstacle: GTA6 Launches on Consoles First, and Traditional RP Was a PC Thing

When considering whether such RP can be enjoyed in GTA6, there is a decisive premise that is easily overlooked: the form of release.

GTA6 launches first on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, while the PC version is only described as coming later, with no timing announced. On the other hand, GTA RP so far has effectively been a PC-only activity. RP servers including NoPixel run on FiveM, and FiveM is premised on owning GTA5 on PC. Consoles have no client-modding mechanism like FiveM.

Layering these two together reveals an important conclusion. Even when GTA6 releases, traditional FiveM-style RP will not be viable until the PC version is out. And while the PC version is, judging from the precedent of past titles, expected around 2027 to 2028, Rockstar has guaranteed nothing. In other words, if players who start GTA6 on consoles are to enjoy RP-style play from right after release, there is effectively only one path — the case where Rockstar incorporates official RP features into GTA6 Online itself.

This is where the aforementioned Project ROME rumors, the NoPixel partnership, and the chain of groundwork such as Cfx Marketplace take on meaning. There is a view in the community and parts of the media that connects these to read it as official RP being loaded onto GTA6 Online from the start, or early on. Given Rockstar's moves so far, it is a coherent line of speculation. But, as repeated, Rockstar itself has not guaranteed any RP support for GTA6 Online. The console-first release format remains the most realistic constraint that greatly influences when and by what means RP will become playable.

Will GTA6 Itself Support Immersive Life Play

Beyond just the RP foundation, how far GTA6 itself supports an immersive life is also a point directly tied to whether RP-style play is possible. Here too, it is necessary to separate the facts visible in trailers from leaks and speculation.

What can be confirmed from official trailers and Rockstar materials:

  • A large number of unique NPCs appear on the beach, behaving organically, such as applying sunscreen and recording videos. The crowd density appears to greatly exceed that of GTA5.
  • Depictions can be seen of NPCs recording the player's actions on their smartphones.
  • An in-game social media interface resembling TikTok or Reels appears, with staging in which events happening in the city flow in real time.
  • Weather changes such as storms and rainfall are expressed in the footage.
  • Character switching between the two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, is shown.

On the other hand, things that remain at the leak or speculation stage and have not been officially confirmed by Rockstar:

  • Specific figures such as being able to enter 40% (or 70%) of buildings. These are leaks and rumors whose numbers also vary, and Rockstar has not officially stated a major expansion of enterable buildings.
  • A memory function in which NPCs remember the player's actions and reflect them in later behavior.
  • A mechanism in which weather steps into and affects gameplay, such as hurricanes blocking roads or police response changing.
  • A technical implementation that auto-generates interiors to make a large number of buildings enterable.

In other words, the overall direction of a more living city can be read from the trailers, but the core part valued in RP — how many buildings you can enter and complete your life inside them — is at this point not confirmed information but in the realm of leak-driven expectations.

Will RP Culture Be Ported to GTA6 (Speculation)

Taking all the above into account, it becomes clear that the outlook of being able to enjoy RP in GTA6 as expected rests on a number of undetermined factors. Finally, let us organize, as speculation, what can and cannot be said at this point.

There is material that bolsters expectations. The largest RP operation, NoPixel, has secured an official partnership; the foundation FiveM has reached its largest scale ever under Rockstar; and rumors of an official creative foundation like Project ROME never cease. It can also be read from trailers that GTA6 itself is aiming for a denser city. If these mesh together, there is a possibility that RP-style play will bloom greatly within an official framework.

But there is no guarantee anywhere. Project ROME is unannounced, and even if it exists its nature is unknown. There are concerns from those involved that, if independent foundations are weeded out in the course of officialization and excessive monetization or restrictions are imposed, there is no guarantee that the free culture FiveM nurtured will be ported to GTA6 as is. The proportion of enterable buildings and the precision of NPCs in GTA6 are still no more than leak-stage expectations. And above all, GTA6 is unreleased, and not a single person has experienced just how far RP-style play actually goes.

It is a fact that demand for RP-style play genuinely exists and that there are signs of Rockstar trying to absorb it. But whether that takes shape as a product remains a question to be verified after release.

Summary: Organizing by Reliability, and Points of Caution

Let us once again organize the information covered in this article by level of reliability.

Confirmed Facts

  • GTA6 is scheduled to release on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S (the PC version comes later, with no timing announced).
  • On September 23, 2025, NoPixel announced NoPixel V through an official partnership with Rockstar. While built on FiveM, it will take a form in which it can be launched directly from platforms such as the Rockstar Games Launcher without separately installing the external FiveM client app.
  • On June 22, 2026, NoPixel V was confirmed to be registered as a title in the backend of the Rockstar Games Launcher (taken as a sign that release is near, but the release date, price, and access method are unannounced).
  • cfx.re, FiveM's developer, was acquired by Rockstar (Take-Two) in August 2023.
  • FiveM was registered on Steam in December 2025 and recorded over 200,000 concurrent players on March 15, 2026.
  • alt:V and RAGE:MP, having received cease-and-desist requests from Take-Two, are scheduled to end around July 6 and August 31, 2026, respectively. From September 2026 onward, FiveM is expected to become the only foundation for GTA V multiplayer modding.
  • On January 12, 2026, Rockstar launched the official mod store Cfx Marketplace for FiveM and RedM (paid mods up to about 390 dollars).
  • Twitch is working with Rockstar and Take-Two ahead of GTA6's release, and Rockstar has previously backed RP by offering prize money to RP streamers and distributing rewards through Twitch Drops.

Unverified Leaks and Rumors (Officially Unconfirmed)

  • The existence and content of the official modding foundation Project ROME.
  • Whether GTA6 Online will support RP or have official RP servers, and its features, name, and start timing.
  • The proportion of enterable buildings in GTA6 itself, an NPC memory function, weather's influence on gameplay, and auto-generation of interiors.
  • RP support on consoles (traditional FiveM is PC-only, and the means of RP on consoles depends on an official implementation).

Speculation and Assessment

  • Whether RP culture will be smoothly ported to GTA6.
  • The assessment of whether officialization is a step forward or backward for RP culture (there is conflict even among those involved).

As a point of caution, GTA6 is unreleased at the time of writing. Caution is needed toward articles that assert RP can be enjoyed in GTA6 as one wishes, and toward information that pretends to have already played and discusses the details of RP features. In particular, given that GTA6 releases on consoles first and that traditional RP was a PC-only activity, information that talks as if traditional RP can be played from right after release is highly likely to diverge from reality. Since verification on actual hardware is not possible, what can be said with certainty at this point extends only as far as that demand for RP-style play exists and that Rockstar is showing moves to absorb it. In following the future of RP culture, an attitude that separates Rockstar's official announcements from leaks and speculation is indispensable.

Note: This article is based on public information, various media reports, and statements by involved parties as of June 24, 2026. Project ROME, RP support in GTA6 Online, the proportion of enterable buildings, and the like are unconfirmed at the time of writing and need to be treated separately from confirmed information. We will update the content as soon as there are new official announcements.
